PE: Introduction to the Digital Art categoriesHi! Welcome to the Digital Art categories central! The following article is intended to be a quick guide on the Digital Art categories to get you started, most of the descriptions included here came from past Project Educate articles (so thanks for all the current and past CVs for their indirect help :P) and will include links to more articles if you want a more deep insight of said category, as well as a list of CVs you can send your DD suggestions to. (As of December 2012, for the updated list of current volunteers you can always check this blog)But first, what is considered DIGITAL Art?Digital Art includes every artwork created with the use and/or help of digital software and tools. Sketchmatch rulesWhat is Sketchmatch? The original Sketchmatch actually was originated on Twitter by idea of ~eL-HiNO, ~toonfed and ~Tebin-Art and later transfered to deviantArt via dAmnThe rules and way to participate has changed slightly since then but the main rules remain the same; the idea is to create a quick jam, a group of deviations with a theme which is set at the moment by the people currently participating. The catch is that you only get 10 minutes to do your entry! Here are a couple of examples: Yes! Each one of these was created in just 10 minutes! So how will this work?We gather over :#communityrelations: The theme will be set at the moment by the participants currently in there. Project Educate: Traditional WeekHello! Welcome to Traditional week of Project Educate. This week we'll be focusing on traditional artwork, which encompasses a wide range of skills, from animation and assemblage to printing and scratchboard. It's the oldest and most well known art forms starting with cave paintings all the way up to today's childhood drawings.Overview:April 9: Assemblage http://deshrubber.deviantart.com/journal/Project-Educate-Assemblage-295042339 Installation Art http://deshrubber.deviantart.com/journal/Project-Educate-Installation-Art-295130694April 10: Collage http://deshrubber.deviantart.com/journal/Project-Educate-Collage-295195117April 11: Drawing From Life http://projecteducate.deviantart.com/journal/Drawing-From-Life-295414295April 12: A Word About deviantArt http://projecteducate.deviantart.com/journal/A-Word-About-deviantART-295682986
Project Educate: AssemblageHello and welcome to Project Educate! Today we will be focusing on assemblage. The term "assemblage" is credited to artist Jean Dubuffet and it refers to work that incorporates everyday/found objects that are not generally thought of as art materials. The incorporated objects can retain some of their original intent, while picking up a symbolic meaning in the artwork. Assemblage pieces can be 2D or 3D and also fit into the mix media, collage, and sculpture categories. Some notable artists to use assemblage i
Project Educate: Installation ArtInstallation art describes an artistic genre of three-dimensional works, that branching from sculpture, are more about the concept than the form. They are usually designed for a specific site, but can be mobile, to transform how the space is viewed. Installations can incorporate a wide variety of materials, from soda cans and wood to video and lasers. So if you've ever been to a laser light show, you've seen installation art. Though it did not become regarded as a distinct category of art until the mid-twentieth century, it has probably been around since prehistory.

Project Educate: Composition BasicsThe action of putting things together; formation or construction. The term composition simply means 'putting together' and is applied to all forms of art. In this respect, composition is all about the placement, arrangement or organisation of the individual elements within a photo. The composition of a photograph is what catches the viewer's attention and is what makes the image pleasing to the eye. By practicing and developing basic composition techniques, you can produce pieces of work which can recreate the impact of the original scene. Some tips for developing composition skills are;Look around using the viewfinder every time you take a picture.Look at each element and how it impacts the overall composition.Become familiar with your camera. Learn how it works, play around with settings and really get to know how each setting changes the overall image.Experiment and practice. Experiment and practice. Project Educate: Aperture, Shutter & ISO SpeedToday we'll take a quick basic look at Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO Speed.ApertureThe aperture determines the amount of light that is allowed into the digital sensor. A small number indicates a large aperture whereas a large number indicates a lower aperture. For example, an aperture of 8 would let in less light than an aperture of 4. Imagine your eye, specifically your pupil; the bigger the pupil is, the more light is being let in and the smaller it is, the less light. This is what is effectively happening with your camera. The aperture also determines the DOF (depth of field). The numbers you usually see on the side of lenses look like this;F 22 | 16 | 11 | 8 | 5.6 | 2.4The larger the number, the less light is allowed in. Each number depicts double the amount of light allowed through the lens. For example, an aperture of 5.6 will allow twice the amount of light in than 8, but only half the amount of light than 2.4.:thumb2614198

Two Forms, One Theme: Results!Wow! When we put this contest together, we were not expecting such a wonderful response and entries! We had a STACK of poems to judge, which is why it took a little longer than planned. However, I am pleased to share with you all the results of the 2 forms, 1 theme contest! As a whole, we were happy with the results. There was some really good choices between forms used- though perhaps some needing to explore the forms a little more. The Eastern forms in particular needed a bit more to them- perhaps reading this interview with some renowned Eastern writers will help. That said, there were some fantastic Ghazals, some seriously strong sonnets and even a limerick thrown in, which was exactly what we wanted to see.The judges based the results viewing each poem individually out of 30 marks. They were marked for each poem individually, the aesthetics between the two, the conten

The Ghazal: An IntroductionGhazalsThe ghazal is a widely-used but poorly-understood poetic genre and style, originating in panegyric Arabic verse and adapted (approximately) into contemporary English poetry. In this article I will be touching on the history of the ghazal, its original Arabic form, and the various ways it's been adapted into English. I will also be spotlighting some great ghazals from deviantART and around the 'net. Please note that the English ghazal, like English haiku, has a handful of forms and aesthetics and no one is more "right" than others; for less confusion I am sticking to the better-known aesthetics in this treatment, and especially to those more frequently seen in literary magazines. Feel free to chime in on the comments with anything you'd like to add regarding other aesthetics. The Arabic GhazalArabic ghazals ( غزليات - ghazaliyyat ) have been around a long time, much longer t

PE: Film and AnimationAs 2012 is coming to a close we can reflect on a lot of new technologies this year. Perhaps one of the biggest advances in technology was that of filmmaking both in the professional and pro-sumer categories with a new GoPro that has 4K capabilities, the Canon 5D MKIII, the Sony F5, and perhaps one of the biggest moves was that of the Blackmagic Cinema Camera. With the exception of the Sony F5, these cameras all came in under $5000, making them readily available both for the professional world and for the pro-sumer world. Filmmaker vs. YouTubeWith all of these cameras becoming more and more affordable, one must ask:

On average, how long do you spend on a drawing?-It depends on my mood. Sometime i can draw all day with 10 hours+ or only 30min per day. Uncertain.4. I specially like color pencils, is what I feel more comfortable with.2.) When you draw, do you plan everything out first, or do you just see where the drawing takes you? For me drawing is about both. Sometimes I plan it with my mind, seems everything will turn on perfectly but it doesn't, and it ends up being something totally different. PE: Anthro - Genre, Anthro vs Furry and AdviceAnthro Art - Different Genres - Anthro vs FurryThe unique thing about Anthro art is that it can take different shapes, sizes, and forms. The only limitation is your imagination. One of the most common misconceptions for Anthro art is that people generally associate it with "Furry" art because most of Anthro art is enveloped around furry animals that look like humans ( Below the very talented ^Katmomma has written up a quick guide to the differences between "Furry" and "Anthro"). Lions, Tigers, Bears and WereWolves. But contrary to popular belief, Anthro art can range from animals to toasters that doesn't involve fur at all! In my previous post about Anthro art, I explained what Anthropomorphic was. Anthro art is based on the very definition below:Anthropomorphic: Ascribing human form or attributes to a being or thing not human, especially to a deity. There is no "right" or "wrong" way to draw or portray Anthro art because like fantasy art, they do

However, there are some simply guidelines that you can take home with you and practice to better your creativity.AnatomyThis is probably one of the most challenging things for people to adhere to. Anatomy in itself is a little challenging but once you get it, the sky's the limit as far as drawing Anthropomorphic animals, beings and things! So below are a few pointers!1. The Ultimate Anthro Tutorial - This tutorial was created for all beginners and Art enthusiasts around the world. It has such detail and walks you through all the basics before getting to the next level where you feel comfortable drawing anatomy for an Anthro character.2.

What do you like best about deviantART? I joined deviantART for most likely the same reasons as the majority of the people in this community-- to share my art and develop skills for my own ambition. I wanted to make and share my art for people to see, I wanted to talk to people who shared the same interests as me, but most of all I wanted to learn as much as I could from those I revered and respected. And it was through that, I hoped, that I could become a far better artist than I was, because teaching myself to draw by myself at home could only bring me so far. Another huge factor that led me to join deviantART was the fact that almost all the illustrations here were done digitally! Being only thirteen at the time, I had no idea how digital art was made (as absurd as that sounds). Fortunately, my curiosi

PE INTERVIEW: GraphiteColours Community Projects' Project EducateAn interview with =GraphiteColours.Tell us a little bit about yourself! One of my earliest ambitions was to become an author and illustrator for children's books, after reading Roald Dahl's books illustrated by Quentin Blake. I later realised that wasn't the path for me and now I'm studying Physics at university! I still love art and literature, though, and I finally joined deviantART last year. I started off with writing poetry and short stories but soon became interested in typography and graphic design, and I'm also now involved in several photography groups on dA.What got you into suggesting Daily Deviations? When I first discovered the Daily Deviations page, I was amazed by the high quality of artwork featured there. Whenever I found a really awesome piece of artwork after that, I would suggest it for a DD. My first few suggestions weren't featured, but eventually I got one
PE Interview: Doitforthelulz Community Projects' Project EducateAn interview with community goer `PainInTheAssimilated.Hey David! Tell us a little bit about yourself!Oh I'm not exciting. I'm just some guy here to have fun. Not really as much of an artist as an art appreciator. As the founder of #YouArePart what prompted you to create the group? What is it's overall purpose?Originally I was prompted to make this group because of surveys and assignments I used to do when I was younger. I had a really awesome Critical Thinking class in middle school and in my [god this sounds bad] therapy classes, I was encouraged to do projects that focused on my responses over time. My counselor would have me compare my change in perspective over weeks and months and I decided it was actually pretty interesting to see how others would respond to a similar idea. I love seeing others' different ways of thinking represented through art. It's purpose is
PE Interview: 3wyl Community Projects' Project EducateAn interview with the fabulous ^3wyl.So tell us a little bit about yourself!I never know what to say to something like this. I joined deviantART for the community, and I still am here for the community. I guess... if you take 'average' or 'normal', I'd be the girl on the other side of the world from that. The unusual, under-appreciated, unknown things are what call to me most... sometimes in more ways than one. That barely touches the surface of things, but... on with the interview. What is #ProjectComment?Project Comment is a Group of many projects centred around comments. We try to be as constructive as possible so that our members, and those passing, can benefit from that. Through Project Comment, we offer many opportunities to get and give comments, participate in comment projects, get featured, and a heck of a lot more, to keep it sweet
PE: Digital Art VS other categoriesThe category system within deviantArt has the purpose to organize the thousands of artworks submitted every day and group them together in accordance to style, media, genre and/or theme, etc. Imagine deviantArt without categories, it would be a chaos! Imagine yourself wanting to browse for photography only; without the system organizing every deviation by media, you would find yourself unable to filter artworks that aren't photography in your search results. Thus the importance of categorizing your artwork correctly. By submitting your work to the appropiate category combined with a correct use of keywords, you're a step ahead of being discovered by people wanting to search for art like yours. All this sounds so nice and all, but what happens when a particular piece could fit in several categories? The category system as it is now is very specialized and has literally thousands of different subcategories buried down tons of more subcategories, which is both a blessing and a curse. Havi
PE: Walkthroughs, an alternative way to learn Walkthroughs, alongside tutorials, are always an excellent way to learn. It's really helpful to get educated through a tutorial which tells exactly what to do in a detailed way step by step. However at times what is even more helpful is to actually see the artist in action, there are things you need to see get done by yourself and here is where walkthroughs come into play. There's always something fascinating about seeing the different stages of the creation process of a piece, and you can always learn from the artists and adapt part of said process to your own.Besides showing part of this process through images which show the different stages of a piece, and
PE: 10 tips and tricks not very known about PS10 useful and not very known Photoshop tricks1. Saving your .psd with all layers hidden makes a smaller file compared to saving it with all layers visible.2. You can use the Crop Tool to quickly increase the canvas size of an image by holding down Ctrl + Alt whilst dragging the Crop Tool outside the current canvas.3. If you want to see only one of your layers at a time, hold down Alt whilst clicking the eye icon of the layer. (do it again to show all layers again)4. Holding down Alt while in a dialog box turns the Cancel button into a Reset button, so you can reset the values back to default.5. If you want to just quickly check a very heavy .psd file, you can hold down Shift + Alt while clicking the Open button. This way Photoshop will open a flattened version of the file.6. You can change the gray background that surrounds your image with the Paint Bucket Tool, just hold down Shift and make click on the background.7. Not a very unknown tip, but if y
Project Educate: CollageCollage , a term coined by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, is a mainly visual art form that uses a combination of many smaller items arranged to make a new work. The term is derived from the French word "coller", meaning "glue". Collages can incorporate hand-made papers, newspaper clippings, photographs, and anything else the artist can get their hands on, then pieced together and glued onto paper or canvas. Though the techniques of collage have been around for millennia, within the fine arts realm it is considered modern art. :thumb294894942: Notable collage artists:
Project Educate: Mixed MediaIn the realm of visual arts Mixed Media is a work that employs two or more distinct types of traditional media. A work of art made with oil and acrylic paint would be mix media. The acrylic should generally be the first layers, because they dry much faster and tend to crack when applied over oils, unless that's the effect your wanting. Using vine and compressed charcoal would not be, as they are the different types of the same medium. Mixed Media should also not be confused with Multimedia. Multimedia combines visual element with non visual elements, such as music and interactivity.
Project Educate: ScratchboardThe modern form of scratchboard originated in the 19th century in Britain and France. This is a technique using knives(and other implements) to scratch(etch) designs into a thin layer of white China clay(may also be several layers of multi-colored clay) that is coated with black India ink. Scratchboard became a popular medium for reproduction because it replaced other more expensive mediums in printing, and could photographically reduced for reproduction without losing quality. It was widely used in scientific and advertizing illustration, and is still the prefer method for some professionals. In the fine art arena, scratchboard is used more as a stand alone work of art than as a device to make prints. -
Project Educate: Basic Photography TerminologyPhotography TerminologyBokehThis is a term that refers to the way the lens blurs the image and the aesthetic quality of that blur. Some lenses cause the image to blur that is pleasing to the eye, whereas others blur in a more unpleasant or distracting way. It is considered good practice to have the subject of the image in focus, while the background is blurred. Bokeh occurs in the part of the image that lies outside the depth of field and photographers sometimes use a shallow focus to make the out of focus regions more prominent.:thumb160920938:Depth of FieldThis refers to how much of the scene is in focus. In portrait or macro photography, it is better to have a shallow depth of field and keep only part of the image in focus, as opposed to landscape photography where you'd generally want a larger depth of field and keep everything in focus.:thumb113051648:Ma

The VillanelleSo, form poetry.Daunting, right?I never thought I would be a poet. I was a story-teller, a writer of fiction, a female Hemingway for the new era.And then I took my first university writing class. And fell in love with writing poetry. Free form, flowing, no-holds-barred, no-need-for-rhyme poetry. So, how did I come to fall in love with writing form poetry?Form poetry pushes me, personally, as a writer. When it comes to creating something specifically to put it in a box, I am a perfectionist. And, perhaps in this case, that's a good thing. The first poetry form I had to use in college was the villanelle:Refrain 1Line 2Refrain 2Line 4Line 5Refrain 1Line 7Line 8Refrain 2Line 10Line 11Refrain 1Line 13Line 14Refrain 2Line 16Line 17Refrain 1Refrain 2There are five tercets and a concluding quatrain. France's Fancy Fixed Forms: Rondeau and FriendsFrance's Fancy Fixed Forms: The Rondeau (& Friends):iconlegaspplz: Ah, the French. Their proud romantic culture has provided us with a wealth of artistic innovation: a wide range of cheeses and pastries; the Louvre, Versailles, and the iconic Eiffel Tower; and some memorable poetic forms, including the ballade, the villanelle, and today's subject: the rondeau (ron-DOH).While not as well-known today as the sonnet or haiku, these French styles have been around just as long, if not longer. The rondeau, like its cousins, has a restricted number of end rhymes (two, usually labeled 'a' and 'b') and a short refrain repeated throughout. This refrain, also known as the rentrement, comes from the first half of the poem's first line. If you've heard of the rondeau before, chances are it's thanks to the World War I p
SonnetsSonnetsThis article aims to give you an outline of sonnets, including what they are, their history and some examples of the different kinds of sonnet. Hopefully along the way you'll pick up some tips to help you write sonnets (or write better sonnets!).What is a sonnet?Sonnets feature:Fourteen linesFixed metreFixed rhyme schemeA shift in mood or perspective during the poemSonnets are short poems which traditionally have 14 lines, a fixed metre and a fixed rhyme scheme. Despite, or perhaps because of, the formal constraints of sonnets, they often deal with themes of emotions, love, and freedom. The name ‘sonnet’ comes from the Italian meaning ‘little sound’ or ‘little song’Sonnets usually have two sections; a proposition or argument followed by an answer, solution, or a different way of looking at the original issue.
