A quick and simple guide to Project Educate!

Hello all! Based on our recent poll, a large number of you feel confused about how projecteducate (https://www.deviantart.com/projecteducate) works and how you can become involved. Therefore, this quick guide is being posted in the hopes to help clarify things! Please let us know if you have any remaining questions, and let us know if this helped at all! This has nothing to do with anything I just wanted some Jon Snow up in here. What exactly is Project Educate? Let's make it real simple: Project Educate is a group focused on YOU, the DA community. It is an opportunity for Community Volunteers and deviants to work together on producing content on an education or awareness level to

Selling your Adoptables

Adoptables Week By now I hope you’ve learned quite a bit about adoptables. But once you’ve made and priced a design, how do you go about selling them? When selling anything on DeviantArt, it is important to keep in mind that you are dealing with a buyer's market. Most people on DA don’t have a lot of money, and most of them make art. This means that there are a lot of people trying to sell art and designs, and not a lot of people who can afford to buy them. To illustrate: when I search for 'adoptables' now I get 3,668,913 results, and more are added every minute. To stand out from the crowd you will have to make an effort.

Traditional Asian Costumes, An Introduction

Art History Week Happy belated Halloween! I love Halloween; really, I do. But one thing that always ruffles my feathers (Please don't imagine me with feathers...^^;) is the precarious relationship between this occasion and so-called "ethnic" clothes. Really, most of the commercially available costumes really do not do traditional clothes of any specific nation any justice. I hate to say it, but a lot of these so-called "ethnic costumes" were really just a re-imagining of what stereotyped ethnic clothing would be, often highly sexualised, too. Well, in honour of the wonderful dress-up festival that had just passed (and all the chocola

Where to Sell Your Art

Art in the Professions Many people sell their art to make extra income, or as a full-time job. But how, and where? Surprisingly, there are quite a few options out there. And this works for physically made items such as jewelry, postcards, and traditional art, as well as digital items like t-shirt designs, photos, and digital art. Selling Offline If you prefer to sell offline, in the real world, whether through a third party, or in person, there are several options for you. You can show your art in a gallery, sell in boutiques, craft fairs, or go by word of mouth. Galleries Galleries sometimes charge you to display your work, but get a fai

So you wanna bake a cake?

If there's one thing I've heard several too many times in my years of baking and cake decorating, its the sentence, "I wish I had the talent to do that." And there's nothing that will get me jumping onto my soapbox quicker, eager to explain that there is literally no intrinsic talent involved. Like every creative endeavour or otherwise, it's nothing but years of accumulated skills, knowledge and practice practise practise. So, you want to start baking, maybe it feels like everything you touch is a mess and you don't know where to start. Well, before you can even start trying to do anything fancy you need to prepare your canvas. Or to put it c

The Wonderful World of Anthro Art

Anthro Week What is Anthro Art? Anthropomorphic basically means "to be like a human." Anthropomorphism or Anthro (as the some people call it) is the act of ascribing human characteristics to a non-human being or object. The word can apply to any non-human thing, including animals, plants, inanimate objects, or even natural or unnatural phenomena. So Anthro Art may be described as any medium that employs the concept of anthropomorphism. Expand your arsenal! One of the most fun things I've learned about drawing anthropomorphic characters compared to regular humans or objects (as fun as they are), is that you have more buttons in your arsen

A Recap of 2019 at ProjectEducate!

I did a recap of 2018 at projecteducate (https://www.deviantart.com/projecteducate) last year and it was a fun little exercice that you guys seemed to enjoy as well. So here I am (a little bit late due to January being such a busy month for me) doing a recap of 2019, another year where a lot happened in the group! Before we get into things, I just wanted to specify how proud I am of projecteducate (https://www.deviantart.com/projecteducate)'s growth over the years. I "took over" the responsibility of running the group at some point in 2015 and we've come a long way since then! Just in terms of KPIs: We went from 1,687 members in January 2015 to 5,060 members in January 2020We went from 195,890 pageviews in January 2015 to 542

What not to say when suggesting a DD

As CVs we get a tonne of suggestions for DDs, and with those come a variety of assertions as to why the piece should be featured as a DD. Some of these, particularly those that focus on things extrinsic to the art, really don't help get the art featured at all. In fact, sometimes the given reason can hinder the process instead. Here's a breakdown of the most common, unnecessary things we are told. "The deviant worked really hard on this piece." This is one of the most common extrinsic reasons I receive in DD suggestions, and the reason why it is so common is also the reason it is a bad one: it applies to just about everyone. All artists wh

Hands and how to handle them

People and Portraits Hello! I'm Kiki-Tayler, the one-who-studies-hands. Hands are complicated things and a daunting challenge for artists everywhere. In this article, I'll walk you through the structure of the hand, how hands bend and move, and how to predict where folds of skin and flesh will appear. Whenever I'm looking at something complicated, I find it helpful to look at the bones first. Carpals The 8 carpal bones don't need to be differentiated. While they do flex and move, we almost never see it from underneath layers of skin and muscle. So I always treat them as a single shape. Metacarpals The Metacarpals hide within the palm of

Vexels- what are they?

Gallery Descriptions and Miscats The definition To understand what Vexels really are you must get to know Vexel's bigger brother- Vector. Both can be created with a tool called Pen tool or Lasso Tool (or similar- depending of the graphic software) using layers of shapes filled with solid colour or gradient BUT Vectors are created using vector layers while Vexels use raster layers. Vexel = Vector + Pixel To simplify: Vectors are scalable (you can enhance or scale them down and all shapes will stay sharp and crisp) and Vexels are not (when you expand a Vexel you can see pixelation, as rasters are based on pixels). Vector expanded to 300% V

Viral Verse: Instapoetry

According to the Oxford dictionary, a poem is “a piece of writing in which the expression of feelings and ideas is given intensity by particular attention to diction, rhythm, and imagery.” This definition, while granting free range over the approach and content of poetry, inadvertently begs more than a few questions. For example, could any and all creatives be considered poets? Can something be considered a poem if it relies on "likes", "followers" and "retweets" rather than authentic expression and intense emotion? Therefore, how is the legitimacy of a poem determined—who determines it? Such questions are thrust upon the &

Comiket: The World's Largest Fan Convention

Anime and Manga Week A few years ago, I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to intern in Tokyo, and during that time of course I had to check out the largest fan convention in the world. If you're fond of anime and manga, you may be familiar with it. Or not! Either way, I'm here to talk a little about Comiket and my personal experience attending this massive event. Introduction Comic Market (or Comiket/Comike, as it's more commonly known) is a doujinshi convention that takes place twice a year, three days in August (Summer Comiket, or Natsukomi) and three days in Winter (Winter Comiket, or Fuyukomi). Find your way around Landscapes and Environments

Landscape Weekend Welcome to another FywaDA! This time I have collected a large amount of resources that will hopefully help you improve your landscape and environment drawing skills. Before we move on, I would like to give a very brief explanation of the difference between landscapes, environments and backgrounds. A landscape is a painting or drawing which depicts a scene somewhere. This can be in the countryside, the city ('cityscape'), near water ('waterscape'), or anywhere you like. There can be characters in the image, but the main focuss is on the overall scene. The character (if there are any) is there to enhance the landscape. (ex

Autumn watercolor TUTORIAL (easy sponge technique)

Trad Art: Tools of Your Trade Week Hello everyone, I am happy to be able to post another article as part of projecteducate (https://www.deviantart.com/projecteducate)s Traditional art week. Today's painting is inspired by autumn, its coloring and tutorial will present an easy technique, very suitable for beginners and those, that want to just relax and play around with color - in my opinion. I hope you'll enjoy! ____ Let's go over the materials. The list is pretty simple, you'll need a watercolor paper (I prefer 100% cotton paper for this technique, but make your paper at least 300 gsm, so that it can withstand a lot of water and layering), watercolor paints either in tubes or p

Having discussed different fabrics and their attributes, I thought it would be nice to continue with patterned fabrics, how to work them into your paintings, and what to look out for.
