Complaints About Quality Declines in DD'sComplaints about quality declines in DDsLet's take a quick look at what a Daily Deviation is first. You might remember this article from our last PE week A Daily Deviation is NOT an award, but a feature. If you haven't already, you might want to take a look at it! It's a great read and you can get a good foundation as to what a Daily Deviation stands for.So, I'll be touching on the subject of "Complaints about quality declines in Daily Deviations". Why is this so important to touch on? That's a great question and I will be more than happy to answer it below as I describe some key factors that are often overlooked in the way of art vs quality.Addressing Quality of Deviations"A picture is worth a thousand words." There is a lot of this going around "Daily Deviations are losing quality. They're not as beautimous as they used to be.". How about we step out of the shoes of "what is and isn't art" for just a s
PE: Why I would/wouldn't DD an artist that has....Full title: Why I would/wouldn't give a 5th DD or a DD to a piece with 1200 faves. Disclaimer: This is a compilation article written by ^RockstarVanity, ^pullingcandy and ^Lyricanna. While we do not speak for the whole team, some of the points do generalize. I want to state now that these are preferences, not hard fast rules and every CV has their own. The only hard fast rules are that resources must be credited and no one can receive more than one DD within 6 months. Have you ever wondered why some CVs include fave or DD limits in their DD suggestion guidelines? Why some of us will give a 6th DD or DD a piece with 10 000 faves and others will not? Here are some reasons why.Why won't you DD an artist that already has 5 DDs?:iconlyricanna: The reason for this at it's simplest is to involve as much of the community as possible in DDs. The more detailed version has 3 factors
Welcome to Daily Deviations Week IIWelcome to Daily Deviations Week IISome months back we put together another Daily Deviations #projecteducate week which was quite successful. In light of some of the amazing feedback we recieved during that week, we decided to put together another DD week to highlight some things we were unable to cover last time. During this week we will again focus on some common themes which surround Daily Deviations in our community, and try to shed some light on them. We hope that we will address your concerns, but feel free to ask questions at any time! For anyone who missed our last DD week, we encourage you to look over those articles as well. PE: Self Suggesting Daily DeviationsSelf SuggestingMembers are more than welcome to self suggest their own art work for a Daily Deviation, in fact many CVs highly encourage self suggestions. While self suggesting may have been something people frowned upon in the past, this is thankfully no longer the case as we all recognize the need for self promotion in the competitive world of art.But suggesting my own work is embarassingThere is no shame in trying to get yourself and your work seen. By self suggesting you are merely looking to gain more exposure from a broader audience. Look at it this way, if you're not willing to advertise your own work and get more clients and exposure, who will? When we CVs receive self suggestions we treat them the same as we would any other suggestion so you can easily treat a self suggestion the same as you would a submission of your art to a group so more users can see the piece. While we do not guarantee that we
PE: Know what your CVs can DDDuring my term as a Community Volunteer who accepts Daily Deviation suggestions it has become very clear that some people simply aren't sure who to suggest a given piece to for a DD. While the majority of suggesters have a pretty good grasp on which CVs to send the suggestion to, there are enough suggestions being received which would be better sent to a different CV to warrant some education on the subject. Each DD selecting CV is assigned a gallerySome people believe that anyone with an ^ symbol in front of their username can give out DDs and often there is no knowledge that we as CVs look over specific galleries which are the galleries we are allowed to select DDs from. When looking over :faq18: you will notice the different galleries followed by one or more CVs who watch over those specific galleries. To be very simplistic, if the piece you wish to suggest is in the Anthro gallery you'd then suggest it to ^KovoWolf who watches ov
PE: Quality vs Quantity when suggesting DDsWhile this subject is pretty straight forward sometimes it helps to give a little reminder to prevent people from getting caught up in the moment and not thinking things through entirely. The goal of this article is to remind people that less can often be more. Quantity vs QualityThere have been times where we've seen that some artists believe sending multiple suggestions of a certain piece will get the piece a DD. I mean hey, if we send enough suggestions for it the CV must automatically love it too, right? Unfortunately, this simply isn't the case. As CVs we will select a DD based on the content and not by how many people seem to believe it should be a DD. If we are to recieve many suggestions on a piece we might question if there is something there that we are not seeing in the piece which makes it DD worthy, however intentionally spamming us just creates more work for us which is completely unne

PE: Daily Deviations and Descriptions!Hello and welcome everyone! :iconmoewinkplz:In recent years the question regarding Daily Deviations and Descriptions has been brought up many times. Should DDs include a little description about why they were chosen? Should they be blank so as to let people find out their own reasons for enjoying the featured pieces...? Today we will take a look at the different perspectives on this subject! From community members to community volunteers, let's hear what they have to say! Daily Deviations: To include or not to include descriptions :iconkarinwhatplz: Descriptions or write-ups often include the reasons why said Daily Deviation was chosen, highlighting details that might go unnoticed or expressing the suggester and/or the CVs feelings towards the piece in question. Including a descripion or not is up to each individual CV. Ones prefer writing something for it, others don't. In the end it's just a matter of preference!I made a poll asking the community what they th
Daily Deviation Suggestion GroupsThere are many +Groups for many different topics, and Daily Deviations are no different! When it comes to suggesting Daily Deviations, there are a few +Groups willing to do so on your behalf. Before we get to these groups, however, there is one special group centred on Daily Deviations: #DD-Catalogue. This is a group that collects those pieces that are featured as Daily Deviations. It is a good place to find Daily Deviations of a certain art genre, resources and more, so feel free to check it out! There are six Daily Deviation Suggestion groups that you could potentially join, and these are...#Daily-Deviations, #DailyDev-Suggesters, #DD-ELITE, #DD-Factory, #GetDailyDeviations and #Worth-DDs.The members of these groups will help to suggest your deviation for a Daily Deviation, but some issues should be addressed about them. 'Why is this a DD?' Why are you asking the artist? The cool thing about art is that, unlike pretty much everything else out there, it's meant to elicit an emotional reaction.Sometimes this reaction is rage. Or something close to it.Sometimes when you see a DD you don't like or get or something, it's doing exactly what the artist intended. But other times, it has nothing to do with the art itself. Because, you know what, we all see DDs we don't "get" every now and then. I'll say it now: I don't like every single DD that has been posted.More relevant to this conversation, I don't get why some of the DDs that have been posted were considered featurable (which, as we're trying to get across, really means: I don't personally think that some pieces merit 24-hour massive exposure). And I have the right to think these things. You do, too. What's the appropriate place to find out why something was given a DD?Protip: it's not the art.It might be a self-suggestion or not, the fact o
Are DDs about the art or artist?DDs are about the art, not the artist.Go to the suggestion guidelines of most CVs and you'll notice huge differences between stuff like the amount of favs something can have, personal preferences, and of course galleries. But there's one thing that doesn't change: the guidelines for DDs focus on the artistic qualities of the individual piece.A DD is a 24-hour feature given to a piece of art that the featuring person (usually a Community Volunteer)—and suggester—wants to expose more. Why?Because the art hasn't been appreciated as much as it could be. Or because it's got something to offer the community, like a tutorial or a suggestion. Usually it's a mix of both, although of course each piece is unique. The take-away from this is that while a lot of thought goes into picking a
General Photography CVs - what do we actually DO?Since it's Daily Deviations week, a quick revamp over what the General Photography Community Volunteers can DD - and can't - seemed to be fitting! For starters, those who don't know - your current General Photography Community Volunteers are ^Kaz-D and ^3wyl. For those who aren't aware of the 'lingo' within the galleries, here's a very short glossary... Getting Down with the Lingo DDs This is the common term for Daily Deviations. The Daily Deviation is a daily feature chosen from the galleries here on deviantART. A small assortment of submissions are chosen each day by a select group of staff/volunteer members who wish to showcase an image which they found impressive or otherwise interesting enough to deserve being brought to the attention of the community-at-large. This information can be readily found here -> :faq61: APN This is the short way of saying, Animals, Plants and Nature - a sub-gall
PE DD Week: Why did an icon get a DD?Why did an icon get a DD?Daily deviations tend to be a controversial topic within the community and whether or not a DD is worthy of the feature is, as such, often discussed. As a CV for Icons & Handhelds I often find it interesting to read these discussions, since that way I can see what the community expects of the features, but the recent negativity on the Icons & Handhelds DDs is something I would like to address, which is why I'm thankful I'm given this opportunity during the Daily Deviation PE-week. I will try to explain why I think icons and handhelds are worthy of the feature and why they may be dismissed just a bit too quickly.Let's begin at the beginning. When deviantART first started, it was a site that mainly geared towards customization. Be it wallpapers or icons, if you take a look at some of the first DDs. So how come there'
PE DD Week: A DD is not an award, but a feature.A DD is not an award but an art feature.There. I said it. A DD is not a prestigious award that will change your life drastically, it's just a 24h feature. But why is it so important to make this distinction? It's just a way of naming something and therefore should not be of great importance, yet it makes all the difference in how people perceive a DD.On the importance of terminologyAs mentioned in the intro, the biggest problem when it comes to Daily Deviations arises with the choice of words used to describe what a Daily Deviaton is. When you call it an award, people will automatically assume that the Daily Deviation is the cream of the crop of every deviation posted ever on this site and that no art featured after it should be able to be perceived as "worse". However, when you call it a feature, most people are fine with the picked deviations and don't even hold them to the high standards of living up and
PE: Tolerance Towards Daily DeviationsIf you're like me, one of the first things you do every morning is turn on the computer to check the DDs for the day, if you make this a habit sooner or later you'll see something featured that you won't like at all, making you spill your morning coffee all over the screen.Oh the crime! That poor coffee going to waste. Before you hit the Caps Lock button and begin an essay about the drop of quality of DDs, stop. Take a deep breath, maybe walk around for a bit to cool down, and think about what you're going to do. To begin with, complaining about the DD leaving a comment is extremely disrespectful for the artist because most of the time, they didn't even ask to be featured. Instead, take a moment to consider why was it picked, DDs are chosen for far more than just being visually attractive, as the article Daily Deviations - The Myth and the Legend explained; we often look f
Community Voices: What is a Daily Deviation?DDs: The deviantART definitionSo, as the title says, What in the world IS a Daily Deviation (DD), anyway? You know what deviantART says about it, right? Under :faq61: it says:A small assortment of submissions are chosen each day by a select group of staff/volunteer members who wish to showcase an image which they found impressive or otherwise interesting enough to deserve being brought to the attention of the community-at-large.That says nothing about a DD being a perfect specimen of art-- in fact, it doesn't even use the word "art" at all. Basically, as CVs, when we are giving a DD, we are doing so because we think the image is interesting and well-done and deserves your attention. It may be technically exquisite. It may be technically quite good but exceptionally thought-provoking. It may be exceedingly creative. It may be all of these things! Above all else, it should stand out in some way from others in that medium or gallery.
PE: Daily Deviations - The Myth and the LegendDaily Deviations, or DDs . . . for some deviants, receiving one is the epitome of awesomesauce in the deviantART world. For others, they are a nice way to show off the work of lesser-known artists. Still others treat them as a special way to bring attention to great art that exemplifies works being done by a particular gallery or community.Perhaps because there are so many different ways of conceptualizing DDs, there are also many myths and misconceptions. I would like to address some of those myths by responding to the ones most frequently heard. Please note that these opinions are mine and reflect my experiences with the photomanipulation community, but perhaps they will be informative nevertheless.Myth 1: DDs should always be perfect. To many of us, the ideal Daily Deviation goes to an artist with amazing talent whose work draws you in and makes you think, "Wow, everyone needs to see this!" A DD should move you, inspire you, and provoke you to think, b

PE Interview with DD Recipient AwsumzWhile planing for Daily Deviations PE week many in the community asked for interviews from deviants who had received DDs with varying experiences before. `AwsumZ has received a handful of DDs between his current account as well as his previous account, as such we felt he has went through a range of experiences with DDs as a recipient. What was it like when you received your first DD?Exciting, but also a slight shame because I was a CV (or GD, then) at the time and I saw that it was coming so it wasn't as much as a surprise as I'd have liked it to be lol. It was fun though, a happy magical feeling Have all of your experiences when receiving a DD been the same?Hmm, not really. Some have been good and some have been fairly negative What do DDs mean to you? They're pretty awesome. Being featured is great, it really helps get some exposure and feedback, etc. but it
PE Interview with DD Suggester Minato-KushinaAs part of Daily Deviations PE week we have interviewed the lovely `Minato-Kushina who has been suggesting DDs since November 2010. She has since then had over 500 suggestions accepted and as a result of her regular suggestions, made her name known on the DD page. What first got you interested in wanting to suggest DDs?I don't really remember the exact point when I started paying attention to DDs. I guess, I saw these beautiful pictures at the bottom of my page. Gradually, I understood that they were a kind of "award" for outstanding pieces. I was also wondering how some people could suggest DDs! By searching here and there, I found the way.I eventually decided to send my first suggestion to ^rydi1689, the then Fan Art Gallery Moderator. She is so kind, she accepted it immediately! This encouraged me to suggest more and eventually to love this task. I am generally shy with others. So this gesture, although it may seemed normal to her, it was
PE DDs: When It's Not Always PositiveWhen DDs Go AwryDaily Deviations, or “DDs,” are frequently held in very high esteem on deviantART. After all, what artist does not want his or her work displayed for more than 20 million viewers to see and admire? The benefits of receiving a DD feature include increased exposure for your work and a day in the spotlight for you as an artist. Many people therefore view DDs as badges of honor, awards that make them proud and validate the time they spend in our community.Be careful what you wish for!Don’t get us wrong-- DDs are wonderful for the purposes listed above. But, they can also bring a lot of drama upon the artist, especially if they are controversial.Let’s talk about some of the sources of this drama. The CriticSome people feel that people who post art-- and especially those whose art is worthy of a Daily Deviation-- should have thick enough skin to accept criticism as well as praise. They argue that criticism is part
PE Note to Daily DeviationHello all,In this section of Daily Deviations (DD) PE week I wanted to write about how your suggestions are processed and then turned into DDs, but with a bit more of a focus on the process of how we Community Volunteers (CVs) utilize the note system. I felt it was a place where some common problems arise which may not be talked about all too often resulting in confusion and frustration for both suggesters and CVs. The Note SystemI think many are aware of this but just for the sake of being clear, CVs use the same exact note system as every other user on the site. We do not have any special bells and whistles to organize our notes other than the same tools you all are also given. There is no special tool or program that sorts or does anything special with our DD suggestions for us, it is entirely up to us, how we choose to sort them in our note system. Let's take a closer look at how the process works, shall we? :bul
